Taiwan Hit by Powerful Earthquake

Magnitude 7.4 Quake Strikes Eastern Coast

Aftershocks Continue, Rescuers Search for Missing

A major earthquake struck the eastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 and struck at 1:41 p.m. local time (10:41 p.m. ET), with an epicenter located 327 km northeast of Hualien County Hall. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years.

The quake was widely felt across Taiwan, with strong shaking reported in the eastern coastal cities of Hualien and Taitung. Several buildings were damaged in Hualien, including a hospital and a railway station. Rescuers are working to free dozens of people trapped in collapsed buildings.

Aftershocks continue to rattle the region, with the largest recorded aftershock having a magnitude of 6.0. The Central Weather Bureau has issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coast of Taiwan, but it has since been lifted.

The earthquake has caused widespread damage to infrastructure in eastern Taiwan. Roads and bridges have been damaged, and power lines have been downed. The Taiwan Power Company is working to restore power to affected areas.

The earthquake has also caused panic among residents. Many people have evacuated their homes and are staying in shelters. The government has deployed troops to the affected areas to help with relief efforts.
