When referring to the country in Central Europe, you may have heard the names Czechia and the Czech Republic used interchangeably. However, there is a subtle difference between the two. Czechia is the short name for the country, while the Czech Republic is the official long name. Both names have been used in an official capacity for years, with "Czechia" being the simpler and more commonly used option.
Contrary to popular belief, "Czechia" is not a new word. The Latin form of the name was first used in 1841, and it has been used periodically ever since. The nature of the Czech Republic's geographical English name was a talking point for decades before 2016, when the authorities finally settled on "Czechia" as the short form.
At the United Nations, the Czech Republic's official long and short names are "Česká republika" and "Česko" in Czech, and "the Czech Republic" and "Czechia" in English. In the case of the Czech state, the formal name is the Czech Republic ("Česká republika" in Czech), while the short form is Czechia ("Česko" in Czech).
