Singh Becomes First Indian to Play in Japan's Top Basketball League

Satnam Singh Bhamara, India's first NBA draft pick, has signed with the Shiga Lakestars of Japan's B.League, becoming the first Indian to play in the country's top basketball league. The 7'2" center inked a one-year deal with the Lakestars, who are based in the city of Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture.

Bhamara's Journey to the B.League

Bhamara, 26, was selected 52nd overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2015 NBA draft, making him the first Indian to be drafted into the league. He spent two seasons with the Mavericks' G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, before returning to India to play for the Punjab Steelers in the United Basketball Alliance (UBA).

In 2021, Bhamara joined the Lakestars' training camp and impressed the coaching staff with his size, athleticism, and shooting ability. He averaged 10.8 points and 7.6 rebounds in five preseason games, earning a spot on the team's regular season roster.

Bhamara's Impact on Indian Basketball

Bhamara's signing with the Lakestars is a significant milestone for Indian basketball. It marks the first time that an Indian player has played in Japan's top basketball league, which is considered one of the strongest in Asia.

Bhamara's presence in the B.League will help raise the profile of Indian basketball and inspire young players to pursue their dreams. He is a role model for aspiring basketball players in India and a symbol of the country's growing basketball talent.
